Method
Cylinder: shell area = π × diameter × height; rolled out, the shell is a rectangle π × diameter long and as wide as the tank is high. Each end plate is a circle of π × diameter² ÷ 4. Volume = end area × height.
Rectangular tank: shell area = 2 × (length + width) × height; each end plate = length × width.
Standard plate weight = thickness (mm) × area (m²) × 7.85. The sheet count is the total area ÷ one sheet’s area, rounded up; the cutting layout on the sheets is the fabricator’s.
The tool works out geometry only: area, weight and sheet count. Plate thickness, stiffeners, dished ends and the design of the tank belong to its designer; the tool says nothing about pressure or strength.
Reference table
Weight per square metre and per whole sheet at the common thicknesses: thickness × width × length × 7.85.
| Thickness (mm) | Per m² | 1,000×2,000 sheet | 1,250×2,500 sheet | 1,500×6,000 sheet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 15.7 | 31.4 | 49.07 | 141.3 |
| 3 | 23.55 | 47.1 | 73.6 | 211.95 |
| 4 | 31.4 | 62.8 | 98.13 | 282.6 |
| 5 | 39.25 | 78.5 | 122.66 | 353.25 |
| 6 | 47.1 | 94.2 | 147.19 | 423.9 |
| 8 | 62.8 | 125.6 | 196.25 | 565.2 |
| 10 | 78.5 | 157 | 245.32 | 706.5 |
Shell = π × diameter × height; each end plate = π × diameter² ÷ 4. Add the bottom and the top, whichever the tank has, to the shell.
A closed tank 2 m in diameter and 3 m high has 25.13 m² of plate and holds 9,425 litres. In 5 mm plate its standard weight is 986.46 kg, and its area equals 3 sheets of 1500×6000.
The tank’s designer. It depends on the contents, the size, the pressure and the fabrication code, and this tool does not choose it. Enter the designer’s thickness to get the weight and the amount.
Total plate area ÷ one sheet’s area (9 m² for 1500×6000), rounded up. The figure is by area; the fabricator sets the layout of the pieces in the cutting plan.
