Rebar classes, steel grades, product standards
Rebar
The four rebar classes of the Iranian national standard, with the standard’s mark and minimum strengths in MPa (N/mm²).
| Class | Mark | Rib pattern | Yield | Tensile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A1 | S240 | Plain | 240 | 360 |
| A2 | S340 | Spiral ribs | 340 | 500 |
| A3 | S400 | Chevron ribs | 400 | 600 |
| A4 | S500 | Compound ribs | 500 | 650 |
The number in the mark is the minimum yield strength in MPa: S400 means at least 400 MPa. The class of each member’s rebar is set by the designer on the drawings.
Structural steel
The two common grades of plate and sections, with their current European name and the corresponding ASTM grade. Strengths in MPa; minimum yield for thickness up to 16 mm.
| DIN | EN | ASTM | Yield | Tensile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ST37-2 | S235JR | A36 | 235 | 360–510 |
| ST52-3 | S355JRS355J2 | A572 Gr. 50 | 355 | 490–630 |
The old names follow tensile strength; the European names follow minimum yield strength (S235, S355). DIN 17100 has been replaced by EN 10025. ASTM grades are defined by their own chemistry and tests; substituting a grade on a project needs the designer’s approval.

Pipe
A pipe is named by its size in inches, and its “schedule” sets the wall thickness. Diameter and wall in mm, weight in kg; weight by (OD − wall) × wall × 0.02466.
| Nominal size | Outside diameter |
|---|---|
| 1/2 in | 21.3 |
| 3/4 in | 26.7 |
| 1 in | 33.4 |
| 1 1/4 in | 42.2 |

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 33.4 | 3.38 | 15 |
| 2 in | 60.3 | 3.91 | 32.6 |
| 3 in | 88.9 | 5.49 | 67.8 |

| 5 in | 141.3 | 6.55 | 130.6 |
| 6 in | 168.3 | 7.11 | 169.6 |
Each size has one outside diameter; a higher schedule means a thicker wall and a heavier pipe. For any other size and wall: Pipe weight calculator
This page is a reference for standard names and figures. Choosing the class, grade and section of a project is its designer’s decision.
A3 rebar, marked S400 in national standard INSO 3132, has chevron ribs, a minimum yield strength of 400 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 600 MPa.
ST37-2 is S235JR in European standard EN 10025-2, and its corresponding ASTM grade is A36. Its minimum yield strength is 235 MPa and its tensile strength 360–510 MPa.
ST52 is stronger: a minimum yield of 355 MPa against 235, and a tensile strength of 490–630 MPa against 360–510. Its European name is S355 and its corresponding ASTM grade is A572 Grade 50.
The schedule sets the wall thickness for each size. At schedule 40 a 2 in pipe has a 3.91 mm wall and a 4 in pipe 6.02 mm. Schedule 80 has the same outside diameter with a thicker wall.
IPE beams follow Iranian national standard 1791 and the DIN 1025-5 table; the dimensions and masses of I and H sections are in EN 10365 and their tolerances in EN 10034.
