Standard weight per bar and in total
Method
Weight per metre is side × side × 0.00785 (mm → kg): the section area times the density of steel.
The density of steel is 7.85 g/cm³ (7850 kg/m³) throughout. A number is rounded once, when shown; the table below and the calculator above are the same computation.
The "standard weight" is the nominal weight by table or formula. The "mill weight" is what that mill states for its own length; once you pick a mill, the calculation and the amount use it.
Reference table
Common sizes, by the same computation as the calculator.
| Side (mm) | kg per metre | kg per 6 m length |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 0.502 | 3.01 |
| 10 | 0.785 | 4.71 |
| 12 | 1.13 | 6.78 |
| 14 | 1.539 | 9.23 |
| 16 | 2.01 | 12.06 |
| 18 | 2.543 | 15.26 |
| 20 | 3.14 | 18.84 |
| 25 | 4.906 | 29.44 |
| 30 | 7.065 | 42.39 |
| 40 | 12.56 | 75.36 |
| 50 | 19.625 | 117.75 |
square bar 20 weighs 3.14 kg per metre, and a 6 m length weighs 18.84 kg. Basis: Formula side² × 0.00785.
For square bar 20, one tonne is 53.08 lengths of 6 m, that is 54 whole lengths (1,017.36 kg). For any other size use the count-from-weight mode.
The standard weight is the nominal weight by table or formula, the same for every mill. The mill weight is what each mill states for its own length. Pick a mill and its weight and today's price become the basis of the amount.
Pick a mill to see the amount at today's price, then use "Add to cart" or "Proforma". There is no online payment; an Ahantime expert calls to complete the purchase.
