The suitable steel pipe for water and gas must be selected based on its application, not its market name. If drinking water flows through a building, the pipe and fittings must comply with sanitary installation requirements and be compatible with water quality and the requirements for contact with potable water. For building natural gas, the pipe type, thickness, connection method, and testing are subject to the approved drawings and Chapter Seventeen. Industrial water and gas transmission lines each have separate design specifications. “Galvanized,” “gas,” and “seamless” are not, by themselves, authorization for use.
This guide has been written for buyers and procurement officers. Executional selection and system approval are the responsibility of a qualified designer, contractor, and inspector; do not change the pipe’s position in the drawings based on a price table.
In this guide
- Initial selection based on the fluid and installation location
- Difference between galvanized, black, gas, and seamless pipes
- Documents and specifications to request from the seller
- Two inquiry examples and common mistakes
- Sources and frequently asked questions
Suitable steel pipe for water and gas; where should selection begin?
First specify whether “water” means drinking water inside a building, industrial water, fire-fighting water, or a transmission line; and whether “gas” means natural gas inside a building or a transmission line. A shared market name does not turn these applications into one technical specification.
| Application | Option that can be considered | Purchasing condition |
|---|
| Building domestic cold and hot water | Galvanized steel pipe, if provided for in the project drawings and regulations; non-steel options may also be considered depending on the design. | Compliance with Chapter 16, material and coating, connection and product documents; assessment of the effect of water on corrosion and the health of the pipe-and-fitting assembly. |
| Non-potable industrial or utility water | Welded or seamless steel pipe with a suitable coating, based on the project specifications. | Pressure and temperature, water composition, internal/external corrosion, connection method, and testing. |
| Building natural gas | Steel pipe exactly compliant with the approved drawings and the items accepted under the project regulations. | Chapter 17, ۱۴۰۳ edition, and relevant amendments, pipe and fitting specifications, permitted installation, and testing after installation. |
| Gas transmission line | Line pipe with engineering specifications; API 5L only when required by the project documents. | Grade, diameter, thickness, design pressure, welding, coating, inspection, and traceability documents. |
To view available types, bundle weight, manufacturer, and current price status, open the Ahantime daily pipe price table. That table is a tool for comparing products; technical approval of the use of each item must be carried out separately based on the drawings and product certificate.
Is galvanized pipe sufficient for drinking water?
No. Galvanization refers to a zinc coating and can help control steel corrosion under specified conditions. However, its performance depends on water chemistry, temperature, coating condition, and fittings. In Chapter Sixteen, “Sanitary Installations,” fourth edition, ۱۳۹۶, the selection of materials for domestic water distribution and execution requirements are addressed; for an actual project, the same section and the approved specifications must be checked. The official page for obtaining Chapter 16 is the reference for checking the version.
ASTM A53/A53M-24 mentions the usual use of pipe in water and gas within its scope, but a product standard alone is not proof of drinking-water safety. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 evaluates the health effects of components in contact with drinking water; if this certification is required in the project specifications, the certificate number must correspond to the specific product and components. This certification does not replace Iranian regulations. Before requesting a quotation, view the sizes and prices of galvanized pipe, but do not decide on drinking-water use based solely on coating and price.
For building gas, should we buy black or seamless pipe?
“Black” describes the appearance and coating condition. “Seamless” describes the manufacturing method. Neither one alone determines the grade, thickness, standard, place of use, or acceptance by the inspector. A welded pipe with the required specifications and testing may also be selected for an application permitted by the design and regulations; being seamless does not replace documentation and testing.
For natural-gas systems inside buildings in Iran, the main reference is Chapter Seventeen, fifth edition, ۱۴۰۳, and its official amendments. Do not ask the seller merely to provide “gas pipe”; have the standard number and edition, type and grade, diameter and thickness, manufacturer, and test documents recorded in the pro forma invoice in accordance with the drawings. The gas pipe price page is for finding a product suitable for quotation, not for automatic approval for concealed or exposed installation.
If the drawings specify seamless pipe, compare Iranian seamless pipe in terms of dimensions, standard, and documents against that same requirement. ASTM A106/A106M is for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service; do not write its name in place of the technical requirement for a building gas system. API 5L is also a line-pipe standard and must not be treated as equivalent to indoor-building regulations.
Five items to include in a pipe inquiry
- Exact application: Potable water, non-potable water, building gas, or transmission line; installation location and environmental conditions.
- Governing document: Approved drawings and specifications, product standard number and edition, and relevant regulations.
- Dimensions: Nominal and outside diameter, actual thickness or schedule where required, bundle length, and quantity or tonnage. “Schedule ۴۰” without diameter and standard is not a complete order.
- Protection and connection: Internal and external coating, connection and fitting type, and protection of cut and connection points according to the design.
- Delivery documents: Manufacturer’s name, marking and heat/batch number where required, product test certificate, and inspection and delivery conditions.
Pro forma invoice control rule: Match each product line against the columns “Drawing specifications,” “Seller’s proposed specifications,” and “Supporting document.” If the document, standard, thickness, or requested certificate is missing from the document column, do not consider similarity of name and size equivalent to compliance. To calculate the number of bundles and transportation cost, also match the weight and price unit from the pipe price page with the pro forma invoice issued on the same day.
Two inquiry examples; without guessing specifications
Example ۱: Domestic water for a building
The drawings specify the pipe type, diameter, connection, and drinking-water requirements. The purchasing officer first provides those exact specifications to the seller; then checks the product certificate and marking and the compatibility of the connection. If a galvanized item is cheaper on the website but its documents or connection type do not match the drawings, that item is not a replacement. This is an educational example and does not describe the specifications or execution experience of an actual project.
Example ۲: Natural gas inside a building
Write in the purchase request: “Pipe and fitting for a building gas system according to the approved drawings, Chapter 17, and the required edition/amendment in force; diameter and thickness, product standard, manufacturer, bundle length, and test documents shall be declared in accordance with the drawing attachment.” If this attachment has not yet been prepared, postpone the final order until approval by the designer and inspector. This example is not an instruction for executing piping or determining the permitted type for all buildings.
Three costly mistakes
- Replacing scaffolding or industrial pipe with gas/drinking-water pipe simply because the diameter and price are similar.
- Treating a factory test as equivalent to a drinking-water contact certificate or a system test after installation.
- Buying more expensive seamless pipe on the assumption that it is “always safer,” without checking the standard, design pressure, corrosion, and drawings.
Purchasing summary
The correct selection begins with the fluid and drawings, is checked using the product standard and documents, and only then reaches the price. Compare the options in the Ahantime daily pipe prices, and send the application and approved specifications with your inquiry so that the specialist can review the same procurable product with the required documents. Confirm the final price and availability at the time of ordering.
