Types of Rebar Couplers; Threaded, Press-Fit, and Grouted—Which One Is Suitable for Which Job

All couplers perform the same function (connecting two rebars), but the way they achieve this goal differs among the various types. Threaded, press-fit, and grouted couplers are each suitable for specific execution conditions. Understanding these types allows you to recommend the right option for each project.

Different Methods for One Connection

The threaded coupler is the most common type: the end of the rebar is threaded and fastened into a threaded sleeve, making the connection fast and reliable. A press-fit coupler works without threading; the sleeve is shaped onto the rebar ribs by pressing. A grouted coupler fills the space between the rebar and sleeve with special mortar and is used mostly in precast connections. In addition, reducing couplers for two different diameters and compression couplers for compression rebars are also available.

The threaded coupler is the most common type; however, press-fit and grouted couplers are other options for specific execution conditions.

How to Recommend the Right Type

For most common jobs, the threaded coupler is the first and economical choice. If the project does not allow threading on site, the press-fit type should be considered. For precast connections and special conditions, choose the grouted type. Asking about the project's execution conditions (whether threading is possible, whether it is precast, and whether the rebars have the same or different diameters) will lead you to the right type.

This understanding is the difference between selling a general-purpose coupler and offering a type that precisely matches the project's execution method.

A Sales Note About Certification

Unlike the threaded coupler, whose factory certificate is usually standardized and readily available, press-fit and grouted couplers sometimes have more limited certification because fewer manufacturers produce them. Before committing to supplying these two types for a sensitive project, make sure with the supplier that the documentation required for the project's technical inspection is available, rather than encountering this problem after placing the order.
